Overview

Your liveaboard route: Daedalus, Rocky, Zabargad, Elphinstone
Drop offs, drift diving, big fish (sharks, manta rays), remote reefs, wrecks...

Arrival, embarkation and overnight stay in the harbour of Port Ghalib

Check Dive Abu Dabab - A sheltered and beginner-friendly location, perfect for practising buoyancy control and checking equipment. The bay is known for dugongs (manatees) and green sea turtles.
Shaab Sharm - An excellent drift dive that is often used for its steep walls and the possibility of spotting sharks (grey reef sharks, longimanus) in the open water.
Crossing south to Daedalus Reef.

Up to 4 dives at Daedalus Reef - A huge, isolated reef in the middle of the sea, surrounded by steep walls. Its exposed location makes it a magnet for big fish.
The northern plateau is world-famous for sightings of schools of hammerhead sharks at dawn.
On the east and west sides there are good chances of seeing oceanic whitetip sharks (Longimanus) and other pelagic species.
At the northern end lies the wreck of an unnamed ship at a depth of approx. 24 metres.
Overnight stay: Anchoring at Daedalus Reef.

After further dives at Daedalus Reef, the crossing to the islands of Zabargad and Rocky Island takes place in the evening.

Rocky Island - A small but spectacular rock surrounded by incredibly dense and colourful hard and soft corals. Due to the strong current, grey reef sharks and silvertip sharks as well as manta rays and dolphins can often be seen here.
Zabargad (The Emerald Island) - A larger island with a unique geology. Beautiful coral gardens and passages on the south side and a large, well-covered wreck (probably a Russian cargo ship) on the east side, which starts in shallow 1m and extends to 24m.
Overnight stay: Anchoring at Zabargad.

Further dives, possibly another at Rocky or more exploratory dives at Zabargad, depending on the weather and current.
In the evening start of the crossing northwards to Elphinstone Reef.

Elphinstone Reef - One of the most famous reefs in the Red Sea. An elongated reef with steep walls on both sides and two plateaus (north and south).
Notorious for encounters with oceanic whitetip sharks (Longimanus). They are particularly common here.
Beautiful soft corals and gorgonians, often also reef sharks and barracudas.
Return to Port Ghalib.

Overnight stay: Anchoring in the harbour of Port Ghalib.

Important notice:
This itinerary is weather and current dependent due to the remote reefs and exposed location of the dive sites (especially Daedalus and Rocky). The decision on the exact number and sequence of dives will always be made by the captain and dive guide to ensure maximum safety. It is considered an advanced itinerary.

The Elphinstone is among divers a legend. Solitary offshore reef in elevation of about 100 meters. The diversity is huge. Highlights include encounters with Longimanus sharks and - yes to the season - hammerheads. The flow, however, can sometimes be tricky here.

A very diversified large dive site with many variation possibilities. Overgrown beautiful, rich in fish and always good for several turtle encounters.

Daedalus Reef can only be reached by liveaboard boats and is one of the top dive sites on most divers' wish lists. This spectacular reef, which is about 80km from Marsa Alam and 400m long, is hard to miss as it even has its own lighthouse. With a visibility of 20 - 30 metres, hammerhead sharks, barracudas, large mackerel, tuna, eagle rays and manta rays are frequently spotted.

Shaab Sharm is a popular diving site located about 12 km off the coast of Marsa Alam, Egypt. It is a long, exposed reef with steep walls that drop to over 200 meters, making it rich in coral growth and marine life, though strong currents mean it is not suitable for beginners and night dives are not possible. It is a frequently visited location for divers on south Red Sea diving safaris.

Rocky Island is a very small, uninhabited island in the deep south, about 5 kilometres south-east of Zabargad Island and is only accessible by liveaboard.
It is a small, isolated fringing reef surrounded by deep drop-offs. Its exposed position in the open sea often leads to strong, changing currents, making it an ideal location for drift dives.

On the south side of the island, the reef slopes gently from 10 to 15 metres, followed by a beautifully overgrown, narrow plateau with bizarrely shaped coral blocks, before turning into a drop-off.
There is a well-known, relatively intact wreck at the dive site, which starts at a shallow depth (approx. 1 metre) and extends to the sandy bottom at a depth of 24 metres.
The underwater world is rich with hard and soft corals as well as large fish such as manta rays and hammerhead sharks.
