Home / Itineraries 8 Days / 7 Nights North (Wreck)

Overview

Wreck and reef highlights of the north (starting in Safaga/Soma Bay)

Departure northwards (Hurghada). Check dive in Abu Hasheesh Bay.
Trip to the horseshoe-shaped Shaab El Erg reef, known as "Dolphin House".

Abu Nuhas (the ship graveyard). Two to three wreck dives (e.g. Giannis D, Carnatic).
Short trip to the protected lagoon of Shaab Mahmoudat or Shag Rock at the entrance to the Gobal Strait.
Night dive in the shallow water area of these lagoons.

Long trip to Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai. Dives at the famous Shark and Yolanda Reefs (drift dive, schools of fish). Afternoon trip to the SS Thistlegorm wreck site. First dive at the Thistlegorm.

One or two more dives to explore the holds and deck (locomotives, tanks, motorcycles).
Drive to the Gobal Strait to the Gobal Island region. Dives at the reefs around the island.
Night dive at a protected reef in the Gobal Strait (e.g. at Dunraven or a coral reef).

Trip to the wreck of the Rosalie Möller (cargo ship, depth approx. 30–50 m). This is often only possible in good conditions.
Return trip to Abu Nuhas. Optional wreck dive in the late afternoon (e.g. Chrisoula K or Kimon M). Last wreck night dive at Abu Nuhas.

Two dives at the best offshore reefs: Small Giftun (colourful coral gardens) and Umm Gamar (known for caves and the chance to see big fish).

This route is an intensive "best of the north" tour and, due to the concentration of wrecks and the current dives in Ras Mohamed and Gobal, is best suited to experienced divers with AOWD certification and experience in wreck diving.

The Thistlegorm is probably the most famous wreck of the Red Sea. It lies on the eastern side of the road from Gubal and is especially known for his bulging cargo spaces in which are motorcycles and trucks.

On the western side of the Street of Gubal the Rosalie Moller lies in the depth of 40 meter. Roughly the same size as the Thistlegorm and sunk just two days later. The charge is less spectacular, because Rosalie had only coal loaded. But the wreck is better preserved than the Thistlegorm.

The Kimon M is also known as lenses freighter because of thes charge. The bow protrudes slightly out of the water. The destroyed stern lies at the deepest point at 30 meters.

The once in Travemünde spilled from the stack Chrisola K failed 1981 the reef of Abu Nuhas. The "tiles Freighter" is quite badly damaged. This requires for the diver a special attention.

The steamboat Carnatic is considered as one of the finest wrecks in the Red Sea. The ship had wine and allegedly even gold loaded, sank 1869. From the wreck lying on its side, the fuselage envelope is really just obtained. The partially dissolved planks offer photographers bizarre motifs. The ship had, moreover, a brief guest appearance in Jules Verne's novel "Around the World in 80 Days".

The machine room and the well divable bridge are the highlights of the freighter, which failed on the reef of Abu Nuhas in 1983. Coveted was its cargo of tropical wood.

The Dolphin House is the western point of the reef complex of Shaab el Erg. The chance of the encounter with a pod of dolphins is very large.

Under the central buoy in about 15 meters remains a shark-cage, left by the diving pioneer Hans Hass. The highlight of the dive at the dropoff is a cave in 28 meters depth.

The reef surrounds an island and lies on a wide, flat, sandy plateau (approx. 10 to 20 metres deep), which merges into a steep slope (drop-off). A lagoon to the south offers sheltered anchorages.

It is a large, elongated reef that encloses an extensive, shallow lagoon. This lagoon often serves as a sheltered anchorage for ships overnight.
The main attraction is the wreck of the British merchant ship Dunraven, which ran aground on the reef and sank in 1876. Today, the ship lies keel up (upside down) at a depth of 15 to 30 metres and is broken into two large pieces.
